Hyper 9 vs Hyper 9 HV
Hyper 9 vs Hyper 9 HV
The NetGain Hyper 9 is the motor in most of our classic car kits. It comes in two versions: the original 120 volt Hyper 9 and the Hyper 9 HV, built for 144 volt packs. The motors share the same body, mounting and torque. The difference is the voltage they run on and the controller that comes with them.

The short answer
- Hyper 9 120V if you want the proven Beetle-style setup with a 5 module Tesla pack.
- Hyper 9 HV 144V if you want a little more range from a 6 or 7 module pack and more voltage to work with at highway speed.
Spec comparison
| Hyper 9 120V | Hyper 9 HV 144V | |
|---|---|---|
| Motor and controller kit | $5,980 | $6,030 |
| Universal package | $6,854 | $6,964 |
| Controller | SME AC-X1, up to 132 V | SME AC-X144, up to 180 V |
| Controller output current | up to 760 A (max current listed 750 A) | up to 500 A |
| Peak power | 88 kW | 88 kW |
| Torque | 173 lb-ft | 172 lb-ft |
| Max RPM | 8,000 | 8,000 |
| Motor efficiency | 94% (IE4+) | 94% (IE4+) |

| Contactor in kit | Gigavac GV200-QA | Gigavac GV200-PA |
| Warranty | 1 year | 1 year |
Both are permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance AC motors, IP56 sealed, and their magnets are made without rare earth elements.
Battery packs for each
| Hyper 9 120V | Hyper 9 HV 144V | |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model S modules | 5 in series | 6 or 7 in series |
| Nominal pack voltage | 114 V | about 137 V (6) or 160 V (7) |
| Pack energy | 26.5 - 32 kWh | 31.8 - 44.8 kWh |
| Our assembled pack | VW Beetle pack, 126 V max, $12,750 | VW Bus pack, 151 V max, $12,950 |
More voltage at the same power means less current through the cables and controller, and each extra module adds about 5 to 6 kWh of range.
Which kits use which
- VW Beetle complete kit: Hyper 9 120V, 26.5 kWh, $23,094
- Karmann Ghia: 120V, 26.5 kWh ($20,645) or 144V, 31.8 kWh ($22,329)
Universal package vs motor and controller kit
The motor and controller kit is the motor, controller, harness, contactor and HV relay. The Universal package adds the chill plate for liquid cooling the controller, a Xantrex LinkPRO battery gauge, shunt, J1772 charge inlet and a Prius hall-effect throttle. You build the adapter plate, coupler, mounts and battery system.
